about

‘Whose Side Are You On?’ is a powerful, uplifting musical collaboration with Emma Langford and Thick As Thieves. The song serves as both a rallying cry to revolt against the powers that seek to oppress you. and a warning against complacency.

Whose Side Are You On? was written by the The Brad Pitt Light Orchestra’s songwriter David Blake as a reaction to a certain notorious 2016 election.
Then last year, it featured as the stirring finale to the Gúna Nua Theatre Company’s 2019 award winning theatrical spectacle Bread Not Profits. The play, written by Mike Finn, commemorated The Limerick Soviet - a fascinating historical chapter when the city last found itself in lockdown. Blake wrote the music. Appropriately, the song was recorded (remotely!) during the 2020 lockdown, featuring vocals from the wonderful Emma Langford and the fabulous Thick As Thieves (Lesley-Ann Halvey and Phil Ahern), who also performed in the show as storytelling troubadors. The cast can be heard belting it out on the recording too.

lyrics

Whose Side Are You On?

See their rise in the darkest fall
Wage the coldest war of all
As those in charge
Play their part
Sail their ark
to the nineteenth century
These great pretenders to the throne
Throw all their toys and gauntlets
Down and start
Break our hearts
But those in charge
Have way of shaking us

Those inside
Have it all to hide
If it's death or life
Let the Dow decide
They can break our bones
They can't change our minds
As they turn away
From the souls in plight
And the stars that shine
Are the warning signs
As the truth erodes
In a dripfeed fight
We know their hearts
We we know they'll slip
And we know the sound
Of a sinking ship
You on
Whose side are you on?
Whose side are you on?
Whose side are you on?

Turning all our gold to sand
Back-stabbed by a cold dead hand
Now those in charge
Frozen shards
Blown apart
On a wave of mutiny
Now the dust has turned to fog
And the worst is yet to fall while
Blindfolds on
Pistols drawn
For those in charge
It's a golden dawn

Those inside
Have it all to hide
If it's death or life
Let the Dow decide
They can break our bones
They can't change our minds
As they turn away
From the souls in plight
And the stars that shine
Are the warning signs
As the truth erodes
In a dripfeed fight
We know their hearts
We we know they'll slip
And we know the sound
Of a sinking ship
you on
Whose side are you on?
